Failed EICR? Here's What to Do Next

A failed EICR can feel overwhelming, but the path from report to resolution is straightforward. Here's what each stage involves.

The Report

Your inspector issues a detailed document listing every fault found during the electrical inspection. Each issue receives a classification code from C1 to C3, telling you how serious it is and how quickly it needs resolving.

Remedial Work

Issues must be resolved within 28 days. You're free to use any qualified electrician, not just the one who did the inspection. We can review your report, explain the work needed, and offer a clear, fixed-price quote.

Receiving Your New Certificate

After the remedial work is completed, we test the full installation and issue an updated electrical certificate confirming your property meets current standards.

Why You Might Need a New Fuse Box

Your EICR has failed

The most common reason for a consumer unit replacement. C1 or C2 codes usually mean your fuse box lacks the RCD protection required to pass.

Landlords: time to comply

Landlords in England must have a valid EICR for every tenanted property. If yours fails, you have 28 days to act. We can help you meet the deadline.

Your electrics can't keep up

EV chargers, extensions, home offices, smart devices. If your old fuse box trips constantly, a consumer unit upgrade gives you the capacity you need.

Understanding Your EICR Failure Codes

Each fault on your EICR report is classified from C1 to C3, with an additional FI code. Here's what they mean.

C1 - Danger Present

Immediate risk of injury or fire. Examples include exposed live parts, severe equipment damage, or reversed polarity.

C2 - Potentially Dangerous

Risk of injury exists, and urgent remedial action is required. Examples include lack of earthing or inadequate RCD protection.

C3 - Improvement Recommended

Not currently dangerous, but does not meet modern standards. Examples include damaged switch covers or missing RCD protection.

FI - Further Investigation Required

The inspector has identified a possible fault that requires further investigation before it can be confirmed or classified.

FAQs

Common questions about fuse box upgrades, EICR remedial work, and what to expect.

The cost depends on the size of your property and the number of circuits required. For a standard residential property, expect to pay between £650 and £1,200 including parts, labour, testing, and certification. We provide a fixed-price quote with no hidden extras before any work begins.
A landlord EICR is valid for 5 years, or less if the electrician recommends an earlier re-inspection date. Since June 2020, landlords in England must have a valid EICR for every tenanted property. If your report has expired or shows unsatisfactory results, you need to act within 28 days.
In most cases, no. A consumer unit replacement can be done without a full rewire. However, if your wiring is very old or damaged, some additional work may be needed. We will always let you know before starting if any extra work is required.
Yes. You are not obligated to use the same company that carried out your EICR inspection. You can get quotes from any qualified electrician for the remedial work. Many customers come to us for a second opinion and often find our prices more competitive.
A fuse box and a consumer unit do the same job, but consumer units are the modern equivalent. Old fuse boxes use rewirable fuses, while consumer units use circuit breakers and RCDs that trip automatically when a fault is detected. If you still have a fuse box, it almost certainly needs replacing.
